Wes’ Weekend Golf Tour: Lake of the Sandhills

Last weekend I made it out to Buffalo Point, MB to try their beautiful lakeside course. The course is an 18-hole, par 72, with over 6800 yards play. Again, I will not post my score.

This round I golfed with two other people. Riley, a friend of a friend who I met in the lounge the night before, and a man named Jim, who we were asked to pair with. I later found out that Jim was Jim Thunder, the former chief of the Buffalo Point First Nation, who led the initiative to build the resort and risked his own property to build the road to the location of the resort today.

I have been told that the course is ranked 6th in North America for its beauty. It’s very hard to disbelieve with multiple lakeside holes, dense trees and well kept fairways. The course is also full of wildlife with animals frequently crossing the fairways.

I hope to make it out there once again this summer to enjoy it at least one more time.

Demolition Derby at the 128th Manitoba Summer Fair

On Sunday, June 7th, I competed in the demolition derby at the 128th Manitoba Summer Fair in Brandon, MB. I used a 1986 Ford Crown Victoria which I had “purchased” 2 years earlier for 24 beer.

We started working on the half finished car two weeks before the derby. Poor planning I know. After sitting for those 2 years, water had gotten into the engine and it had seized. We managed to break it loose and replaced the seized carb with on off of one of our trucks.

The car was in some serious need of a face lift. My brother, Cory, gave the car a fresh coat of paint as well as some website plugs. Props to him for doing an awesome job.

We ran in Heat #1 and did surprisingly well for first timers. We placed 2nd in the heat which put us into the Feature at the end of the day where the winner would take home $1500.

In the feature we didn’t do quite as well. Placed 9th out of the 14 cars in the final event. This round the car took a lot more serious of a beating. The rad was crushed, two tires blew, and I’m very sure that I saw some crucial wires melting.

We were unable to get the car running again for one of our mechanics, Matt Miller, to run in the mechanics heat sadly, but it was still an awesome experience for us all. We did have a few cameras running throughout and I will hopefully throw a video together within the week.

Driver: Wes Gill
Pit Crew: Matt Miller, Travis Froese, Steven Keeves, and William McFadden
Special thanks to Grant and Cory Gill who both put a huge effort into the car.

UPDATE: Video is here!

Wes’ Weekend Golf Tour: Riverdale

I have decided that this summer I will take a few of my weekends to travel around Manitoba and play on some of the many courses that are available. I started off the season in my home town of Rivers, MB at the Riverdale Golf and Country Club.

The course looks great and is off to a good start. My good friend Jarred Wood, who makes appearances in several of my videos, is the head greens keeper of the course. Naturally we gave him a hard time over not cutting the tee boxes that day.

We managed to fit in 15 holes before it became too late to continue. We would have perhaps started earlier if I hadn’t locked my keys in my car (D’oh). It took a couple holes for me to remember how to golf, but overall it was a good round. However, until I have respectable scores, I will not post them here. I have several course in mind that I would like to play this summer but I don’t know if I will make it to all of them. There are also several other projects I hope to take on this summer so with any luck there should be a steady flow of new content.

Vote for me for Director of Mayhem

Coors Light is having a contest for 3 ‘Legendary Positions’ at this years Coors Light Maxim Golf Experience. I have entered for the position of Director of Mayhem. Badass title eh. Winners will be flown out to BC to ‘work’ at the event. The Director of Mayhem basically goes around making sure everyone is having a blast.

“Win a job? That seems like a crappy prize”

Well the way I see it, it will likely be better than whats going on around here.

So if you can find the time, please vote for me because every vote gets me one step closer to partying in BC again and of course you know there will be some awesome videos/pictures afterwards.

Cheers to the nights and days I cannot remember.

Freeflight

This past weekend we built a decently sized jump into which we would pull a GT snoracer behind a snowmobile. It took a few tries to figure out a speed at which to hit it to make the gap however speed is not the only factor.

Being pulled on a GT behind a snowmobile itself is quite the challenge. It is incredibly difficult to hang on to a rope pulling you at great speeds and steer a machine that was designed for 12 year olds. If you were lucky enough to make it too the jump, you then had to land it.

Sadly I was unable to stick any of the large jumps. I came very close once, but came crooked off the landing and lost it shortly after. We did film the jumping, but this video will likely be archived until next year when we can get some more footage since the snow is melting rather quickly.

Snowboarding in Fernie, BC

Today I returned from a snowboarding trip to Fernie, BC through Red River College. We rode in the mountains for 3 days while staying at the Stanford Inn. There was an overnight snow the night before our last day so we did get to enjoy some powder before we left.

Snowboarding in the mountains is nothing like the hills around Manitoba and was an awesome experience. Sadly the downside to the mountains is getting there. We took over a 15 hour bus trip across the prairies for this trip, and there is NOTHING on the prairies. Many of us on the trip decided that a flight would be worth the extra cash next time around.

We stayed in a 18 person chalet, which every night had at least 50 people in it during peak party times. Surprisingly, there were no damage charges or any extra fines despite a few damaged items (coffee pot, vents, doors, etc).

Through the trip we did do some filming so there should be a video out within the next few weeks, but I may kick out some smaller clips to YouTube before then.

Red Bull Klunker Rally 2008

Over the past weekend I again participated in Red Bull’s Klunker Rally. This year the rally was more centered around the Winnipeg area and involved a lot less kilometers than the previous year. Teams were given clues to find certain points where they would participate in a series of challenges for points. At the end of the day the team with the most points would win flight lessons for their entire team. Our team placed approx. 5th out of 29 teams with 85/100 points.
